Allen, Hervey. ISRAFEL: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE. London: Victor Gollancz, 1935. Previously published 1924.
VG in black cloth with gilt-stamped spine. Bookplate of noted collector Leigh Blackmore to f.f.e., and two small bookseller stamps to front pastedown. 748 pp. Dustjacket has two minor old tape repairs but is intact and apart from sunning to spine (common with yellow jackets) is Good.
Originally issued during 1929 in two-volumes, this 1934 Edition has been completely reset with corrections and footnotes by the author, Hervey Allen (1889-1949), and combines two volumes in one. The author insists that this is not historical fiction but a well supported biography of the fascinating poet and macabre author, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), as contextualized in early 19th century America as “reconstructed from . . . documents, letters, books, and illustrations of the period.”
